Audiobook Review: Don’t Call It a Comeback by Keira D’Amato
As both a runner and an audiobook lover, I couldn’t wait to dive into Keira D’Amato’s memoir Don’t Call It a Comeback. I’ve followed Keira on social media for a while and have always admired her authenticity, sharp insights, and yes—her legendary fashion sense (who else remembers that epic gold fringe jacket from the Ali on the Run live show in Boston, 2023?).
This audiobook doesn’t just tell a story about running; it tells a story about resilience. Keira opens up about the messy, unpolished parts of life that so many of us can relate to: rebuilding fitness after having a baby, pushing through the disappointment of a DNF, and learning to celebrate persistence over perfection. Her journey is a reminder that progress often starts with the smallest steps and grows through consistency.
What struck me most was how layered her story is. Beyond the miles and medals, Keira writes candidly about the weight of online criticism, doping rumors, and the very real challenges of being a military spouse. As both a veteran and former military spouse myself, I found these sections especially poignant and validating—it’s a side of elite performance that doesn’t always make the headlines.
Of course, it’s not all heavy. Keira injects good doses of her legendary humor and plenty of pop culture nods, from The Bachelor to Kim and Kanye, that keep the storytelling fresh and relatable. Her wit shines through and makes the audiobook feel like a conversation with a sharp, funny friend.
Speaking of the audiobook: hearing Keira narrate her own story added an extra layer of power and intimacy. The emotion in her voice—sometimes fierce, sometimes vulnerable—made the listening experience feel raw and genuine in a way that a printed page alone couldn’t capture.
In the end, Don’t Call It a Comeback is more than a memoir about running. It’s about resilience, identity, and the courage to rise again—whether from a tough race, a harsh headline, or our own inner doubts. For me, it was a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5 star listen, and one I’ll be recommending to anyone chasing their own “second act.”
